The article linked says it can't increase the premium which is nice, but I don't like the rest of it. Solely when you drive and if you brake hard. So stopping at a light that turns red or avoiding a wreck could make you pay more. I certainly don't want one. And if your OBDII port is by your knees, it could be dangerous in an accident.

I have a friend who has around 7-8 drivable cars. He put the progressive snap-thing on his z06. I thought that was funny, but he said he drove it less (was his DD) and drove a bit more cautiously. Now, he has lower rates on all his cars, even his Ferrari TR. Personally, I think it's an invasion of privacy and wouldn't get one for lower rates.

I had a rep from progressive try to sell me on it, I cheerfully asked "what if Car A sees many HPDE events throughout the summer months? Can I remove the device so as not to influence my rates due to these events? " Then there was a really long silence in which she tried to think of any reason such a devise would be desirable in my case.

My problem with these is other drivers.

If some idiot cuts me off or cuts into my lane (and that happens quite often out here in Las Vegas with all the tourists not paying attention and all the other people and their lack of intelligence) and I then act accordingly (i.e. brake hard or swerve), this thing has no way to know if I was swerving because I'm a jack ass bad driver or if I was serving to avoid a jackass bad driver.

I mean it does kinda make sense in that it theoretically offers a more personalized rate structure based on your driving habits/style so that, presumably, you are not affected by other bad drivers. However I see it as an invasion of my privacy and will never have one. Yet another reason to drive an old car! Good Luck!

My parents got a 2000 Chevy Blazer 2wd to use to haul things and tow stuff. Since my Trans Am is undergoing major restoration work that renders it un-drivable I have been driving the truck. Getting 15mpg is awesome.

And from what I'm reading about these things, you're fucked either way. It's 1. hit the car in front of you or 2. Lose any discount because of "extreme braking". Where I live, deer and other animals are near/in the road at all times. So I've had to do many "extreme braking" things not because I'm an unsafe driver, but because one was hanging out in the road around a corner. Also, I'd set off the extreme acceleration every 5 mins...

Me too and to add to it the truck is RWD with little weight over the rear. There is wheel spin galore and the stupid program reads wheel spin as acceleration. According to it I can go 0 - 50 in no time at all.

My insurance company sent us a couple ads for this a few months ago, I'm definitely not buying into it now. I think this would make it more likely for someone to crash. They'll worry about their driving habits more about actual driving.
